A Knock at the Door

After a long, arduous summer of work, illness and travel, our family stopped to spend a few days at the home of friends in Park City, Utah. I sat in a chair on their deck, put my feet up and closed my eyes. The scent of pine and fresh mountain air filled my senses and began restoring my mind, heart, and body.
My friend walked out on the deck and silently handed me a glass of wine and a small bowl of nuts. She left without a word and returned to the house. It was an act of kind hospitality that had an enormous effect on my tired soul.
Kindness like this teaches us how to give as well as receive. Ephesians 4:2 encourages me with this: “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with one another, making allowances for each other’s faults because of your love.” My friend made allowances for the blob on her deck, that wasn’t helping with dinner.
In Revelations 3: 20 Jesus says: “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” In my experience, he comes with humble, gentle, kindness.
Pause and think about how you can show hospitality to others and the Lord. Ask yourself how you are doing at opening the door to him.
